I'm a wedding photographer and videographer and I love capturing weddings all around the world.
A wedding at Shri Sanatan Hindu Mandir offers an incredible blend of culture, tradition, and architecture. This beautiful celebration took place at one of London’s most remarkable Hindu temples, creating the feeling of a destination wedding without ever leaving the UK.
Opened in 2010 after an extraordinary 14-year construction project, Shri Sanatan Hindu Mandir was built entirely from imported Indian limestone. As a result, the intricate carvings and traditional craftsmanship make it easy to forget you’re in London at all. In fact, many guests commented that it felt as though they had been transported directly to India.

The day began with groom preparations surrounded by family and close friends. The groom was dressed in a traditional Hindu wedding outfit known as a Sherwani. Typically worn by grooms during South Asian weddings, the sherwani is a long embroidered coat that is often paired with fitted trousers known as churidars and a decorative turban, or safa. The intricate detailing and elegant design made for some fantastic photographs while also reflecting the cultural significance of the occasion.

As is customary at many Hindu weddings, the groom’s arrival was greeted with excitement from both families.
Before being allowed to enter, the bride’s family playfully challenged the groom and his party. Traditionally, negotiations take place and the groom is often expected to offer money or gifts before gaining entry. This light-hearted tradition creates laughter and helps break the ice between both families.
Once welcomed inside, the celebrations continued with blessings and greetings before the main ceremony began.

The Hindu wedding ceremony was filled with meaningful customs and symbolic rituals that have been passed down through generations.
One of the first rituals was the Jaimala (Varmala), where the bride and groom exchanged floral garlands. This beautiful tradition symbolises acceptance, respect, and the beginning of their union.

Following this, the couple participated in the Kanyadaan, a deeply emotional moment where the bride’s parents formally entrust their daughter to the groom.

The sacred fire, known as the Agni, played a central role throughout the ceremony. The fire acts as a divine witness to the marriage and represents purity, commitment, and spiritual guidance.

Another important tradition was the Mangal Pheras, where the couple walked around the sacred fire while making promises to one another. Each round carries specific blessings relating to prosperity, strength, family, love, and lifelong companionship.
This was followed by the Saptapadi, also known as the Seven Steps. These seven steps are considered one of the most significant parts of a Hindu marriage, with each step representing a vow the couple makes together for their future.

Finally, the groom applied Sindoor and tied the Mangalsutra, symbolising the completion of the marriage ceremony.

Throughout the ceremony, family members played important roles, creating an atmosphere filled with emotion, blessings, and celebration.

Following the ceremony, guests gathered for family photographs both inside and outside the temple.
The beautiful limestone architecture provided an incredible backdrop for portraits, while the joyful atmosphere resulted in natural and authentic moments between family members.
In addition, the temple grounds offered plenty of opportunities to capture a mixture of formal portraits and candid interactions.

One of the highlights of the day was stepping outside during the evening to capture some beautiful night-time portraits of the couple.
The city lights and evening atmosphere created a completely different feel from the daytime ceremony. As a result, we were able to create a collection of elegant and romantic images that perfectly reflected the excitement of their first evening as newlyweds.
These portraits provided the perfect ending to an incredible day filled with culture, family, tradition, and celebration.
